Things that make me happy!

Heart of my home

This post is just some pictures of my kitchen as it is now. I do love my kitchen; it's my favourite room of the house. But of course, there are some changes I'd love to make!!

Standing in the entrance to the living room, looking into kitchen. On the left is the front entrance; the door straight ahead is to the back porch; the window over the sink opens to the back porch (can you say odd? At least there is another window somewhat in-line with it so I can see out into the yard!); the eating area is to the right. The cupboard above the microwave I would love to remove and add open shelving there instead. The dresser thingy with basket drawers is where we keep hats, mitts, sunscreen, -whatever the season dictates!

The stairs lead up to the loft (someday we would like to make the loft the master bedroom); the doorway leads to the bathroom; my new fridge (that actually matches my stove!! -very exciting!) Hm, I really need a stainless steel garbage can... but really, it is very hard to justify spending money on a garbage can, no matter how much better it would look!

The door on the left leads to a teeny tiny 'porch' (hardly big enough to change your mind in! but it is a good security feature against the dog accidentally getting out! it is also where the dog sleeps) and the front door.

Oh, my! I can see why you want to paint your kitchen, it would look sooooo lovely with white cabinets! If you painted them white I would also paint the paneling white, but I'm sure you already decided on that. I guess you'd have to paint all the trim white....On the first picture, that bottom cabinet on the end, I would put white beadboard paneling on there too. Love the stuff! LOL! Those cabinets that you want to remove, couldn't you just leave them and take off the doors? Or do you want something wider? They do look small for the spot. Hey! Your chairs are just like the chairs on that blog I sent you the link about painting wood. I like the advice she gave the reader about painting the chairs but leaving the table. You could do the chair white. I love your fridge BTW as well as your stove! Wouldn't it be neat if under the stairs you made like a book shelf type of thing for cook books and displaying things? I almost forgot, I also like your dresser by the door. :)

You would also have to paint the doors white. Also, because yellow is your favorite color, I would paint the walls a light soft yellow. :)

Well Ryan just absolutely refuses to let me paint the cabinets... so to update the kitchen another way, I have decided I would like to paint the walls grey (not the panelling, that would remain as is). He's not big on that idea either, but I am trying to convince him! It's a totally different look than the "all white" that's so popular right now, but still modern, and probably actually more our style. I want to remove the cabinet and put something wider, plus I think it would look funny to just remove the doors - it would look like.... a cupboard without doors! The table & chairs will probably never be painted but I am OK with that. I kinda like them, just not in that kitchen! But someday when we renovate, we will have more of a "dining area" and less of an "eat-in kitchen". As for the stairs... they will be changing when we renovate (they are verrrry steep and narrow).
P.S. The laundry room downstairs is going to be bright white and sunshiny yellow! :)

Are you going to change the hardware to match the appliances? They're gold tone right? Or is it the lighting? I think you have a very nice kitchen and you do have nice cabinets that you can work with. Mine are awful! They don't even match, the bottoms are different from the top. I agree the grey will give it a fresh modern look, for sure! I can see why you would want to just remove that one cabinet altogether, you could just put it in the laundry room. Also one day when you renovate and have a dining room you'll have a lot more room in the kitchen. Have you considered putting an island once the table is gone? Get a couple of stools and you're set. :)

I disagree! Sorry! I would NOT remove the cupboard and put shelving - you would constantly have to be dusting off the shelves and everything would need to be arranged perfectly. I think it would look funny and unbalanced.
I also think grey would be dismal, dark and depressing. You do not have a lot of bright windows in there and grey would make it feel like a jail cell or a basement. Personally, I would paint the walls a soft sunny buttercream or popcorn yellow. I would paint that panelling either white or the same colour as the walls and that would make the room feel much larger! (wood panelling is so 2 decades ago!)Oh, and that post by the stairs really needs to be the same as the wall colour. I might even get brave and sand and stain the cupboards a darker brown to match your table. That would keep the wood which Ryan seems to want to do but update them. Also, Walmart sells stainless steel handles in packages for not too much. Then, get rid of the out dated Venetian blind and make a Roman one. And while I'm on a roll, I'd borrow or rent a sander (it doesn't need to be a huge floor model, just a random orbital or palm sander)and finish sanding that lovely hardwood floors in the living room (it's already half worn away for you) and slap a quart of high gloss varethane on it. It would look awesome! You should have lots of time now with Julia at school - get to work!! :)
